The Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports inaugurated the National Services Scheme (NSS) Republic Day Camp-2001 which is being organised by the Ministry at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. The camp, with 160 young participants representing 24 States/Union Territories and 71 Universities was inaugurated here today. Speaking on the occasion, the Minister said that NSS is one of the important youth programmes of the Government and gives them ample exposure in constructive endeavors like mass literacy, environment preservation, health, education, community development etc. In the one month long camp the participants will be imparted training in leadership development and parade apart from organising various social cultural programmes.

NSS volunteers have been participating in the Republic Day Parade since 1988. It was discontinued from 1995-97. The Republic Day camp brings a mini India to the nation`s capital. It provides a unique opportunity to the NSS volunteers not only to interact amongst themselves but also to meet and talk to national personalities and exchange views and experiences. They also visit places of cultural and historical importance in and around Delhi to enrich their knowledge about the country.

Participating in the Republic Day camp is considered a matter of pride for NSS volunteers as they undergo rigorous selection procedure for the same. It is also seen as a recognition of self less community service tendered by the NSS volunteers throughout the country. The camp is managed entirely by Student volunteers and contingent leaders. It includes morning assembly, Shramdan, yoga, physical training, community signing, parade practice, lectures, discussions, quiz/debates and evening cultural programmes. NSS which was launched in Gandhiji`s Birth Centenary year 1969, in 37 universities involving 40,000 students today as more than 17 lakh student volunteers on its roll spread over 175 universities.
