CENSUS
OF INDIA 2001 (PIB 09-Jan-2001)
The next decennial population census of the country, Census of India 2001,
will be undertaken from 9th to 28th February this year throughout the
country except Jammu & Kashmir where the Census has already been completed.
The Census, the largest administrative exercise in the country will be
carried out through 20 lakh Enumerators and Supervisors for collection
of information on demographic, social and economic aspects. The data collected
on each individual will be tabulated for further analysis to enumerate
other characteristics about the population. This data will be used for
the next 10 years by the Central and State Governments, Planning Commission
and all other agencies (national and international) for preparing developmental
plans.
The Census organisation is undertaking concerted publicity campaigns to
create awareness in the people on the event and educate them about the
questions they will have to answer. The Registrar General and Census Commissioner
has also appealed for full cooperation from various organisations and
also NGOs for successfully completing the Census exercise.
