CEASEFIRE
IN JAMMU AND KASHMIR FURTHER EXTENDED
The Ceasefire in Jammu & Kashmir has been further extended by another
month. The Union Government extended the Ceasefire after reviewing the
entire security scenario in the State, particularly the acts of cross
border terrorism and crimes against civilian population.
The peace initiative taken by the Prime Minister on the 23rd of November
on the eve of the holy month of Ramzan had been extended earlier by a
month to coincide with the Republic Day 2001, despite heinous acts of
terrorism and violence against innocent men, women and children to give
the militant groups another chance to respond to the peace initiative.
While reviewing the security scenario in Jammu & Kashmir the Government
regretted that Pakistan has not recognised the demand of time for peace
and continues to promote, encourage and abet cross border terrorism. These
acts must cease and the activities of organisations like Lashkar-e-Toiba
and Jaishe-e-Mohammad curbed and controlled by Pakistan. The Government
believes that violence must be ended and peace-which has been welcomed
by the people of Jammu & Kashmir given every chance.
