DAY FOLK DANCES TO PRESENT RESURGENCE OF INDIA
The central theme for the Republic Day Folk Dance Festival this year will
be "Resurgent India". This will be presented by a lively ensemble of different
folk dances, conch shell playing, Shahnai, Vedic hymn chanting, vibrant
instruments like Sarangi, dhol and Khartal and Nagamandala floor painting
from Kerala. The programme has been specially choreographed by famous
choreographer and theatre personality, Shri Bhanu Bharti.
The President Shri K.R. Narayan will inaugurate the festival on 24th January
2001, at 11.00 a.m. at Talkatora Indoor Stadium. Thereafter, Folk Dance
Troops drawn from all over the country will put up performances every
day from 25th January to 30th January at the Talkatora Indoor Stadium
and eight other venues across Delhi.
The Ministry of Culture will also present a tableaux titled Resurgent
India at Republic Day Parade depicting the new progressive and modern
India. Accompanying the tableaux will be 100 Chhau dancers from Bokaro
(Jharkhand), depicting this vibrant and lively dance form. The music to
be played accompanying the tableaux is titled "Raho Dharma Mein Dheer
Raho Karm Mein Veer", written and composed by Guru Rabindra Nath Tagore.
Four childrens dances will also be presented on the Rajpath during the
Republic Day Parade. They include Chholia of Uttranchal comprising 150
children, Kalaripayattu of Kerala comprising 180 children, Badhai of Madhya
Pradesh comprising 180 children and Thang Ta of Nagaland to be presented
by 150 children.
Department of Culture will also present a special multifaceted cultural
programme prepared by about 200 children with various disabilities from
25th to 31st January at various venues in Delhi. Titled as "Umang 2001"
the programme has "Spirit of Triumph" as its theme.
