Rishi Dayanand, the Founder of the Arya Samaj, was a fearless, outspoken man. His far-reaching social and religious reforms made people with vested interests, his bitter enemies. Many of them were against his activities; a few evil once even plotted to kill him. Unable to get anywhere near him, they finally lured his cook, Jagannath, with offers of money and gifts.

He betrayed the trust his Master had reposed in him. Everyday, he added a little poison to the food served to the holy man. Rishi Dayanands health began to deteriorate gradually, until two hakims were consulted to diagnose his condition. The hakims were grimfaced as they announced their well-considered opinion to Rishi Dayanand.
