Jarasandha was a great emperor. He was very powerful and possessed of great capacities. The real source of his power was from his two brave commanders - Hans and Dimbhak were very fast friends and both had deep affection for each other. The history of India is full of such instances of ideal friendship and this was one of the many. The friendship between Hans and Dimbhak was based on selflessness. Friendship lasts only where the heart is pure , free from any selfish motives. In order to defeat Jarasandha, there was no other way but to get rid of Hans and Dimbhak. In order to achieve this objective in the battlefield, Krishna killed a Swan (Swan is English word for Hans) and spread the rumour that Hans was killed. Dimbhak heard this rumour. He was deeply grieved at the news of his friend's death, He decided to put an end to his life. He jumped into the river Yamuna and killed himself. After Dimbhak was dead, Shri Krishna went up to Hans and taunted him with a penetrating speech : "My dear friend, what sort of a person are you? Dimbhak jumped into the river and put an end to his life on hearing rumour about your death. You do not seem to feel anything when Dimbhak is actually dead. How can you be so peaceful when your friend whom you loved so dearly is dead?" At this Hans also jumped into the river Yamuna to prove his affection for his friend. Thus Lord Krishna weakened Jarasandha's strength and later defeated him.

In uttering such untruths, he was motivated to achieve some higher objective. It was never for his selfish interest. Hence, the life of Lord Krishna is very deeply meaningful, and though apparently contradictory, it is still a part of the very embodiment of the Divine.
