The Sufi books tell us a moving story of a group of moths.

From a distance they kept on watching the flame of the candle and they wondered,What is there in this flame that keeps on drawing us? What is there in this flame that fascinates us beyond measure? One by one the moths went to investigate.

They wanted to find out the reason why the flame kept on drawing them even as a magnet keeps on drawing a needle. One by one, they went. They approached the flame. They felt the burning heat and they returned. And the leader of the moths said to them,You cannot know the secret until you have become one with the flame. You approach the flame, it is true, but before you become one with the flame, you come back. You cannot know the secret. When the turn of the leader came, what did he do? Straight away he entered the flame. He became one with the flame. He was extinguished by the flame and the moths that watched from a distance said, He knows the secret for it is he who has become one with the flame.

Until the knower and the known become one, you cannot have true knowledge. Until the lover and the Beloved become one, you cannot have true love.
